An update from Marybeth Tarzian

Dear Alumni and Friends,

As the school year ramps up in Ithaca, I want to pause for a moment to thank all of our alumni and friends who made the last academic year a great success. Over the past year, we hosted 44 events both on and off of campus. In addition, 1,496 alumni and friends made gifts to the College totaling $4.8 million, helping the College train the leaders of the future and make discoveries that improve our world. Support from our alumni and friends is part of what makes Human Ecology such a special place.

This year, we are off to a very busy start. We have already hosted events in New York City, on campus and in Syracuse – gatherings that provided great networking opportunities for our alumni and friends, and gave us a chance to give updates on the exciting things taking place at the College.

Highlights so far this year include bringing together faculty and students from Fiber Science & Apparel Design with alumni engaged in the industry, and holding a reception with Dean Alan Mathios for our Syracuse alumni, parents and friends in the home of Donna Bacchi-Smith ‘76. You can learn more about other events we hosted this fall in the stories included in this issue of eNews.

And the year has just begun! We have many more miles to roam including visits to our friends in Michigan, Texas, Vermont, California, Connecticut and Chicago within the next few months. Please refer to the calendar in this eNews issue for more detailed information about some of these upcoming events. And, as always, if you have any questions, suggestions or comments feel free to contact me.

Best Wishes,

Connecting with new alumni

Volunteer leaders from the Dean’s Advisory Council and the Human Ecology Alumni Association Board of Directors gathered with recent alumni to share why they give their time and talent to the College.

The event was held in September in New York City at the home of Cindy Green ‘79.

Green said that Cornell has influenced both her professional life and her personal life tremendously, so she welcomes the opportunity to give back.

“The friends I made at Cornell and my connections through the university have shaped all aspects of my life – who I married, the children I have (one now an alum herself!) and the people I am associated with across the globe,” she said.

“I always seek and welcome opportunities to give back to Cornell and to be involved with young people who ,too, have had these experiences. So, I very much appreciated the the chance to welcome Cornell alumni to our home, share my good fortune with them and hopefully advance similar interests in our young alumni.”

Sloan alumni in the news

Two alumni from the Sloan Program in Health Administration are making news.

Peter Bergmann ‘98 was named an “Up and Comer” by Modern Healthcare magazine. He is the CEO of St. Joseph’s and Sisters of Charity Hospitals – both part of Catholic Health System in Buffalo, NY. He shepherded the two hospitals through an accelerated merger earlier this year.

And Cathy Bartell ‘90 was appointed to the newly-created Connecticut Health Care Reform Advisory Board to develop health care policies that respond to proposed federal health care reforms. Bartell is the administrator of the New Britain Anesthesia, P.C. medical practice in central Connecticut.

New dorm honors Flora Rose

The final house in the newly-constructed West Campus Housing Initiative was officially named in honor of Flora Rose, a nutrition professor and one of the founders of the College, at a celebration earlier this fall. The housing project was developed to facilitate relationships between faculty members and undergraduate students.

At the celebration, Dean Alan Mathios praised Rose’s dedication and influence at Cornell.

“It is inspiring to see how much impact Flora had. One person can start something that has a life of its own,” he said.

You can read more about the dedication in this article published by the Cornell Daily Sun.
